Press Conference for the 4th “Hello Taiwan!” Concert to Fundraise for Typhoon Haiyan Relief

On Nov 16th at 2pm, “Hello Taiwan!” concert organizers including TAANY, Passport to Taiwan, Tai-Ke New York, and AsianInNY.com held a press conference at Taiwan Center (137-44 Northern Blvd, Flushing, NY 11354) to announce the details of the 4th “Hello Taiwan!” Concert. Due to the recent severe damage caused by Typhoon Haiyan, the “Hello Taiwan!” organizers have decided that the concert proceeds will go the Philippines Typhoon Haiyan Relief Effort. The concert will feature four live bands including Feifu, Torpid May, Bikini Carwash and The Underground Channel with a special guest Filipino American performer IZZY who is the winner of 2013 Kollaboration New York Talent Competition. An opening ceremony of the event will be keynoted by Deputy Consul General of Philippine Consulate General, Mr. ZALDY B. PATRON, and VIP guests to attend also include Comptroller John Liu, Councilmember Peter Koo and Assemblyman Ron Kim.

Last year, many local Taiwanese communities participated the 3rd Hello Taiwan! concert and raised $10,000 to donate to to the Breezy Point firemen whose houses were burned down as our support to the Hurricane Sandy Relief effort. With an estimated 11 million Filipinos affected, displaced or left homeless by this catastrophic disaster, “Hello Taiwan!” concert has urgently rallied an impressive group of musicians, and community organizations to join force to support Typhoon Haiyan relief since Taiwanese’s lives are threatened by typhoons each year and they experience the damage caused by typhoons first hand with a frequency of 3 to 4 times annually.

This is the 4th year of “Hello Taiwan!” concert and this time the event is bringing more amazing musicians as well as a theme of Taiwan Night Market to kick off the Thanksgiving weekend. This is definitely a night not to miss. It’s a night to enjoy Taiwanese night market snacks, popular Taiwan Beer, and great live music while supporting a great cause.

New York City has long been one of the leading centers of indie music movement. Within it, Taiwanese musicians are in the scene making music and hoping one day in reaching to the top. The concert provided a platform for the bands to perform while the fans got to listen to many amazing Taiwanese bands perform for a night of rock-and-roll, a cultural night to be remembered together before the Thanksgiving festivities.

Featuring four live bands:

Feiwu (廢物樂隊) is the hard-rocking band who wrote and performed the classic “我愛台灣啤酒” (“I Love Taiwan Beer”) and other original songs at Spring Scream and various venues around the island from 1997 to 2001. Feiwu is well known as one of the core bands that pioneered the Taiwan independent music scene of the ’90’s along with Mayday (五月天), Cthonic (閃靈), 1976, The Chairman (董事長), and Quarterback (四分衛).

Bikini Carwash is a four-member rock/punk/pop band from Brooklyn, New York. An old-fashioned rock ‘n’ rock band at heart, New York City’s Bikini Carwash just wants you to have a good time. They specialize in joyful bursts of jewel-toned, punky pop goodness that make audiences smile and shake their booties. As life is hard enough—if you’re going to make and perform music, why not have the most fun possible?

Torpid May produces progressive ambient collages that are delicate and coarse, somber and affecting, dreamy and stern. Packed with suspense and twists, they create a brand of melodic rock that unravels tired assumptions for unexpected sonic musings. The band is coming off an active year appearing at the 2013 MEANY Festival, Keep Taiwan Free concert at Time Square, and Passport to Taiwan at Union Square Park.

The Underground Channel is a Brooklyn based band whose unique take on classic rock and modern renditions of good old foot stomping, adrenaline pumping riffs is both refreshing and exciting. Owing to the variety in their individual tastes and backgrounds the band’s music has distinct elements of punk, grunge, and progressive rock. Underground Channel is a hybrid new age classic rock band that will keep your ears interested and your feet rocking.
