The American Cancer Society Asian Initiatives hosted the “Spring of Hope” Gala 2014 at the Tribeca Rooftop on April 9. The passionate members warmed up the air of the rooftop that Wednesday night. “Spring of Hope” was a fundraising dinner to unite the Chinatown community in order to raise cancer awareness.
Behind this successful and constantly growing organization, there are hard working associations, such as the American Cancer Society, Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association, The Promise Society, Board of Advisors, and the “Spring of Hope” Gala Committee. The mistress and master of the ceremony was Judymae Liu. Judymae started her modeling career at the age of 18. She was also an Image Consultant, and has spoken in colleges on the importance of self esteem and image.

The night began with the remarks from the “Spring of Hope” Chair Warren Chin, the President of Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association of New York (CCBA) Eric Ng, the Board of Advisors Sing Chan and ACS Leadership Edward Ip. This was followed up by the Special Contribution Awards for Dr. Wilson Ko, Paul Ng and the Promise Society, and then the keynote speech of Dr. Wilson Ko.
Dr. Ko received a Honorary B.A. degree in the field of Biochemistry at the University of California, Berkeley. His numerous experiences and dedications brought him many titles, such as the co-founder of the Cornell satellite cardiac surgery program, the Chairman of the Cardiothoracic Surgery Department at St. Vincent Hospital, Professor of Surgery at New York Medical College, Co-Director of Asian Cardiac Center at Beth Israel Medical Center, and more.
Paul Ng was the President of the CCBA from March 2012 to March 2014. Ng had devoted his time in serving the Chinatown community. He was the vice president of the Sun Wei Association for six years. He was also a board member of the Lin Sing Association and had been its vice president for four years. He organized activities, managed duties, and solved issues within the community.
The Promise Society is a non-profit charitable organization with missions to promote health, education, and to improve the quality of life. The Promise Society is composed of many young professionals from different fields such as in health, finance, marketing, event planning, technology and law, but they all have a common goal to address the importance of health and social issues in the community.
This year, the American Cancer Society Eastern Division Asian Initiatives will be focusing on lung cancer since it is the second most common cancer in both men and women. The associations are working hard to improve cancer screenings, treatments and quality of life for patients.
They as well provide cancer education, so people can become more aware. Their hard work goes beyond their job positions. Each and every one of the members put all of their efforts into working toward a better and healthier society.
Broadway Barkada
The evening was informative, educational and very entertaining. After the speeches, there were 15 performers from the Broadway Barkada who presented their beautiful voices, which filled up the air of the evening. The Broadway Barkada is composed primarily of Filipino performers who have professional credits in the performing arts.
ATV Miss Asia of 2013
The ATV Miss Asia of 2013 continued to warm the night. Mikki McQueen O’Brien, one of the Miss Asia’s, presented her vocal talent and sang two songs, one in English and the other in Chinese. She is currently a full time hostess for ATV New York Express. Cathy Jiang played Chinese instruments. She is the first runner-up of Miss Asia 2013, second Prize at the fourth China Nationality Pageant, and 2008 Top 10 in Future Anchorperson Competition in Guangzhou. Lastly, Kara Li performed some magical skills and dancing skills. She is Miss Photogenic of Miss Asia 2013, Winner of 2012 La Peau Top Model Search, and an Outstanding Volunteer of 2013 AIESEC, HIV/AIDS Education Project.
The educators and performers made up the experience of the evening. It was a night of celebration of the contributions made by all the associations. Please be aware of your health, and take advantage of the services that are offered by these hard working, reputable associations.
