For the 13th consecutive year, WHITE WAVE produced and presented its annual DUMBO DANCE FESTIVAL (DDF); a four day marathon showcase of cutting-edge contemporary dance featuring both emerging and eminent choreographers. This year, DUMBO DANCE FESTIVAL featured over 80 companies with 450 performing artists, held at WHITE WAVE’s John Ryan Theater on September 26th-29th. Aside from WHITE WAVE’s Opening Night GALA fundraiser on September 26th, all performances within the 3-day dance extravaganza were free of charge to the public.
The 2013 DUMBO DANCE FESTIVAL (DDF) presented extraordinarily diverse groups of contemporary dance works, both in style and spirit. Up to 7 companies presented in every hour of programming, hailing form NYC’s vibrant contemporary dance scene as well as across the US, Canada, Korea and England. The grand scale of the 2013 DDF, the diverse artist participation, and vast interdisciplinary variety distinguishes this event from its peers.
WHITE WAVE originated the DUMBO DANCE FESTIVAL in 2001 as a response to the dance community’s need for performance venues that would not only present, but also produce the work of rising choreographers at little or no cost to the artist. WHITE WAVE, in total, presents three annual large scale festivals (DUMBO DANCE FESTIVAL, WAVE RISING SERIES, CoolNY Dance Festival). To date, WHITE WAVE has presented over 2,000 choreographers/dance companies and over 8,000 performers to a total of more than 65,000 audience members!
The 2013 DUMBO DANCE FESTIVAL kicked off with WHITE WAVE’s Opening Night GALA Celebration on Thursday, Sept. 26th at 7:00pm. The night began with opening remarks from Mr. John Ryan, White and a ceremony to honor Dr. Ludo Scheffer for his devotion and dedication to WHITE WAVE Dance. After opening remarks, the crowd was able to witness stunning performances by six stellar contemporary dance companies from Antonio Brown, OUI DANSE/Brice Mouseet, Kuperman Brothers, Billy Bell/Lunge Dance Collective, Buglisi Dance Theater and WHITE WAVE Young Soon Kim Dance Company. A scrumptious buffet dinner of Korean specialties was provided followed by a dance party.
The last day of the 2013 DUMBO DANCE FESTIVAL was on Sunday, September 29th, from 8PM to 9:30PM. It was the Festival Grand Finale, and six renowned choreographers/companies performed their work, including Antonio Brown, Amalgamate Dance Company, Jacobs Campbell Dance, Alyson Laury, Tiffany Rea-Fisher/ Elisa Monte Dance Company and WHITE WAVE Young Soon Kim Dance Company.
From Oct. 23-Nov. 10, WHITE WAVE presents its 8th annual WAVE RISING SERIES, showcasing both emerging and eminent dancemakers. The festivals will be held at WHITE WAVE’s John Ryan Theater, located in DUMBO Brooklyn, a vibrant arts hub just one subway stop away from downtown Manhattan.
