The Taipei Cultural Center presented Taiwan Rising Stars Classical Music Concerts IV on November 10th at the Taiwan Academy. It was an afternoon of beautiful music from talented Taiwanese musicians Lo-An Lin, Nana Ou-Yang, and Daniel Hsu.
The program consisted of Allegro Appassionato Op.43 by Saint-Saens, Cello Sonata in E minor RV40 by Vivaldi, Memory by Joe Hisaishi, Schindler’s List by John Williams, and Polonaise Brillante Op. 3 by Chopin from Nana Ou-Yang on the cello and Daniel Hsu on the piano. After a short intermission, the program continued with Chromatic Fantasy and Fugure, BMV 903 by J.S Bach, Sketch of the Rainy Harbour Section I, Rain, and Section IV, At the Temple Gate, by Shui-Long Ma, and Piano Sonata No. 2, Op. 35 in B-flat minor movements I through IV by F. Chopin, performed by Lo-An Lin on the piano. After the performances, a reception followed and the night ended on a lovely note.
Nana Ou-Yang
Nana Ou-Yang, born in 2000, was the youngest cellist ever to give a solo recital debut in National Concert Hall of Taiwan. With such success in music at this early age, Ms. Ou-Yang has been recognized by Taiwanese media as a learning model in the classical music industry and a future rising star.

Inspired by cellist Mei-Ying Liao, Ms. Ou-Yang started playing the cello at the age of six with great enthusiasm; she is passionate about bringing happiness to audiences through her music. Nana Ou-Yang has won many competitions including 1st place winner in cello and 2nd place winner in piano in the Wen-Hua Taiwan Cup Music Competition, 1st place in Grand Tainan National Music Competition in both cello and string quartet categories, and 1st place winner in the National Music Competition of Taiwan. She has also participated in the National Cello Institute Summer Festival in the U.S and 2011 Salut Summer Festival in Taitung, instructed by Shi-Lan Xiong (Principal cello of National Symphony Orchestra) and Ri-Sheng Huang.

Ms. Ou-Yang’s other special achievements include holding a charity concert at her 10-year-old birthday and that she was recommended to attend Affiliated Junior High School of National Taiwan Normal University, where she studied cello with Ling-Yi Ouyang and piano with Hsuan Lo. A native of Taiwan, Nana Ou-Yang came to the United States in August to attend Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, where she studies with renowned cellists Peter Wiley and Carter Brey.

Lo-An Lin was born in Taipei, Taiwan. And she graduated from the Eastman School of Music with a Master of Music degree studying with Ms. Nelita True, and received her Bachelor of Music degree studying with Mr. Yoshikazu Nagai at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music as the recipient of the Janet Rose Piano Scholarship, where she was awarded the Young Artist Award and won their piano concerto competition as the only freshman pianist in history. She is currently enrolled in the Artist Diploma program at the Yale School of Music as the recipient of the George W. Miles Scholarship, studying with Mr. Hung-Kuan Chen.

Some of the highlights of her competition awards include: 1st prize at the collegiate division of MTNA Piano Competition in California, 3rd prize at the Corpus Christi International Piano Competition, 2nd prize at the Lennox Young Artists International Competition, 1st prize, and Audience prize, Concerto prize, and Best performance of an Australian work prize at the Lev Vlassenko Piano Competition, 1st prize at the National MTNA Senior division competition, and 2nd prize at the Kosciuszko Foundation Chopin Piano Competition. She is also the First Prize winner and recipient of the Baroque Prize at the 11th San Antonio International Piano Competition in 2012.
Ms. Lin has appeared in recitals in the Seoul National Arts Center in Korea, National Recital Hall in Taipei, Taiwan, and the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. She was invited as the guest artist to perform a solo recital at the Kawai Keyboard Series at Queensland Conservatorium, Australia in 2008 and at the Chopin Society Annual Birthday Concert in San Francisco in 2013. In 2014 she will be performing with the San Antonio Symphony.
Nana Ou-Yang, Daniel Hsu
Daniel Hsu was accepted to the prestigious Curtis Institute of Music at age 10, studying with the world-renowned pianist Gary Graffman and legendary piano pedagogue Eleanor Sokoloff. Now, at age 16, he is pursing his Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance degree at Curtis.
At the young age of eight, Mr. Hsu became the youngest ever first place winner of the San Francisco Chopin Competition and the 1st place winner of the All-State Music Teachers’ Association of California Piano Concerto Competition, playing Mozart Piano Concerto No. 17. His orchestra debut was at age 9 performing Beethoven Piano Concerto No. 2 with the El Camino Youth Symphony.
Mr. Hsu has won many competitions including the 1st place winner of the International Russian Piano Competition; the 1st place of the Pacific Musical Society Piano Competition receiving the James Denver Prize; the 1st place winner of the Menuhin-Dowling Young Artist Competition; and the first place winner of CAPMT Bartok and Contemporary Music Competition.

In addition, Mr. Hsu has performed with many orchestras including Fremont Symphony Orchestra after winning the concerto competition as well as the Taghioff Prize; the Golden Gate Philharmonic Orchestra; and the Castro Valley Chamber Orchestra after winning the Mozart Festival Piano Concerto Competition. Today, his piano playing is broadcasted across the United States through channel WHYY.
A native of the San Francisco Bay Area, Mr. Hsu enjoys photography, film production, and programming in his spare time, as well as playing duo and triple piano music with his brother and sister, Andrew and Ashley Hsu, who are also both Curtis students.
The concert was completely sold out with many fans standing in the back room. We hope to hear these three young musicians to perform in New York again! Bravo!!
