On Sunday, November 4, 2012 7:30pm at John Ryan Theater, WAVE RISING SERIES held a special event after the shows were cancelled due to Hurricane Sandy. We were very fortunate to be able to be part of this closing event for this series and had a chance to enjoy the amazing dance group Sun Heon Dance Company’s wonderful performance. WAVE RISING SERIES started on Oct 17th and ended on Nov 4th but many shows were cancelled due to the terrible Hurricane Sandy where Dumbo Brooklyn was flooded and many residents were out of power for a few days. The three week series presents works by 25 choreographers/companies in six programs curated by Artistic Director Young Soon Kim. The 7th Annual Wave Rising Series featured 2 of Korea’s leading groups in the contemporary dance field –Lee, Hwasuk Dance Project and Sun Heon Dance Company. At this special event, we got a chance to speak to the artist director of Sun Heon Dance Company and enjoyed their wonderful dance styles!
Sun Heon Dance Company, what can we say? Their performance is simply stunning! The company’s mission is to express the Korean spirit through new creative traditional dance. Their dance fully express the love to Korea and also through their performance, they bring bright and powerful energy to people in Korea.
Su Jung Cha is the Professor of Sook Myung University and Artistic director of Sun Heon Dance Company. She is keep trying to combine with Korean traditional Dance and creative dance. Sun Heon Dance company presented “Suleebulzak ⅠⅡⅢ” as they believe the best creation comes from the traditional. Sun Heon Dance company is the winner of the “Turkey Fork Dance Competition” and “Seoul Dance Festival”. Sun Heon Dance company also has selected as a excellence award in “ The World National Theater Festival” last year. In this piece, Sun Heon Dance company want to express what is the Korean sprit through new creative traditional dance as their main them of the company.
Consisting of 11 extraordinary dancers, WHITE WAVE Young Soon Kim Dance Company is committed to the creation of a union between the natural rhythm of the planet and the primal essence of the human spirit. Young Soon Kim and the company have appeared on many principal stages both in the US and the Far East — Joyce Theater, Kennedy Center, Dance Theater Workshop, Jacob’s Pillow, American Dance Festival, Theater at St. Clemens, Florence Gould Hall, Judson Memorial Church, Dancenow Downtown Festival, National Theater of Seoul (Korea), National Theater of Taipei (Taiwan), Hong Kong Academy of the Performing Arts, Ichibangi Theater (Japan), as well as at regional venues across the United States.
Over the last decade, WHITE WAVE’s Artistic Director Young Soon Kim has gained eminence as one of New York’s leading dance curators as producer of three annual festivals (DUMBO DANCE FESTIVAL, WAVE RISING SERIES and Cool New York DANCE Festival) at WHITE WAVE John Ryan Theater; for all of these productions, WHITE WAVE presents new work and/or repertory by Kim. WHITE WAVE’s wide press coverage over the years has included interviews on CNN’s International Inside Asia program and features for WWOR-TV Channel 9’s 10 O’clock News and Fox 5 TV’s Good Day New York.
