WHITE WAVE a dance company founded by the legendary dancer, Young Soon Kim held an opening night gala for the 14th Annual Dumbo Dance Festival. Kim championed this festival since its inception in 2001. She invites dancers from all over the world to participate. This festival serves as a platform for young dancers and choreographers to gain recognition in this lucrative market.
Both Jazz and contemporary dancers took the stage to strut their stuff and prove to the audience that they spent hours on end preparing for this performance.
It was a mythical journey from slow paced dogmatic routines to fast pace madness. Cheers and applause engulfed this theater after each performance. There’s a dance routine to fit everyone’s taste.
The show demonstrates a sensual tango routine performed by three lovely ladies followed by an innovative choreography performed by a duo of exotic amazons crawling and utilizing the floor space. After that act were jazz dancers combing jazz hands and movements with upbeat sassiness.
Although all of the performances were phenomenal, the star of the show were excerpts from Kim’s own choreographed dance, Eternal Now, which depicts multiple stories told through motion that draw out the many emotions humans experience from anger to sadness to lust.
The Dumbo Dance Festival will go on from September 25th to September 28th coinciding with many other art festivals in the iconic Dumbo neighborhood which is one subway stop away from Manhattan. The unique fact about this dance festival is that every hour a different dance company will be performing. This exclusive theater gives audience members the intimacy feel with the performers. Be sure to check out what Dumbo has to offer especially for those art enthusiasts.
