On Sunday, April 1, 2012 at 7:30PM, Roberto Villanueva performed at the renowned Alvin Ailey Citigroup Theater, The Joan Weill Center for Dance to give the audience members a glimpse inside his life as a dance artist in New York City.
“Pieces of Me: An Inside Look at a Dance Artist’s Journey,” is a program of six solos choreographed and performed by Roberto Villanueva. Roberto’s personal commentaries are interpolated in the show to give the audience members a glimpse inside his life as a dance artist in New York City, and offer his perspective on the challenges and imbalances in the field of concert dance as well as his inspiration for the show and each solo. The audience members will have a unique concert experience as they witness Roberto prepare for the show, change from one piece to another, and interact with the audience through his commentaries. This show is meant to reveal not only Roberto’s strengths as an artist, but also his vulnerabilities as a person.
Support for “Pieces of Me: An Inside Look at a Dance Artist’s Journey” has been provided through the Harlem Stage Fund for New Work, which has received support from the Jerome Foundation. Previous recipients of this award include notables such as Donald Byrd, Ronald K.Brown/Evidence, Nathan Trice, and Earl Mosley. This concert also serves as a fundraising event for BalaSole Dance Company.
Roberto, born in the Philippines, is the Founder/Executive/Artistic Director of BalaSole Dance Company–the only company in the U.S. dedicated to bridging the gaps in the field of concert dance. Acclaimed nationally and internationally for his technical virtuosity and compelling personality, Roberto has worked with notable choreographers such as Eleo Pomare, Kevin Wynn, Dwight Rhoden, and Milton Myers. Descriptions of Roberto as an artist include “a powerhouse” (The Village Voice); “breathtaking!” (La Liberté/Switzerland), and “extraordinarily gifted dancer” (Attitude Magazine), “an experienced performer” (TheaterScene.net), and “a mentor with a mission” (Backstage). Roberto has mentored/worked with artists from renowned companies such as the Jose Limon Dance Company, Complexions Contemporary Ballet, Metropolitan Opera Ballet, Parsons Dance, Elisa Monte Dance, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Lucinda Childs Dance, Philadanco, Joffrey Ballet, Donald Byrd/The Group, Ballet Frankfurt, Paul Taylor Dance Company, Twyla Tharp Dance, Gus Giordano Jazz Dance Chicago, and Rockettes. Roberto’s works have been presented at various venues including the Baryshnikov Arts Center’s Jerome Robbins Theater, New York Live Arts (formerly Dance Theater Workshop), Ailey Citigroup Theater, and Tribeca Performing Arts Center.
