Movie Review: Beijing Love Story

By Ka Yee Chan

Beijing Love Story (北京愛情故事) features five interlocking tales of love within different ages. It is a continuation of a TV series of the same name. Beijing Love Story is written and directed by Chen Sicheng. It was released on February 13. The cast members included Tony Leung Ka Fai, Carina Lau, Wang Xuebing, Yu Nan, Chen Sicheng, Tong Liya, Wang Qingxiang, Siqin Gaowa, Liu Haoran and Nana Ouyang.

Movie began with Chen Feng (Chen Sicheng), a young architect in Beijing just earning enough for his daily expenses. He went to a party and met Shen Yan (Tong Liya). It was love at first sight. There, they began their relationship. Unexpectedly, Shen got pregnant. With the financial status of the couple, it was difficult to support a family and create a good environment for the expected baby. At the same time, Shen is under the pressure of her parents wanting her to marry a rich man who had been waiting for her. Is the love between Chen and Shen strong enough to overcome all the obstacles?

The camera moves to Chen’s boss, Wu Zheng (Wang Xuebing). Wu had been cheating on his wife many times and called his late nights “business dinners.” Wu’s wife, Zhang Lei (Yu Nan), had been holding her feelings in until one night she saw evidence with her own eyes. She decided to take revenge. She went to a club and attempted to cheat with her own boss (Tony Leung Ka Fai), which didn’t go well. What would Zhang do next? Is she going to divorce her husband?

Zhang’s boss, Liu Hui, is role-playing meeting up his mistress in Greek. The “mistress,” Jia Ling (Carina Lau) turned out to be his wife. This is a way to heat up their marriage. On the other hand, their daughter (Nana Ouyang) presented the most innocent love with a boy (Liu Haoran) from her school. Their love is very straightforward; there is no need to think about now or future. Action is everything, you love the person, and you would do anything for them.

Lastly, the story focuses on the boy’s grandfather, Old Wang (Wang Qingxiang), and Mrs. Gao (Siqin Gaowa). The relationship of the two elders is unclear, rather they are old friends or they dated before. Mrs. Gao was constantly organizing dates for Old Wang. She wanted to pair him with somebody. Is Mrs. Gao genuinely wanting to pair Old Wang with someone? What is the true reason behind this?

It is a fast-moving movie featuring five very different love stories in Beijing. It is a movie that makes the audience think about the people around them, their relationships, and how to show love. It is never too late to show love to the people around you.
