The Art Institute of New York City Spring 2014

By Candace Lee

Through the eclectic mix of music, from emotion-driven ballads to exploding bass beats, I knew I would be in for a spectacular melding of inspiration and ambition, boisterous fabrics and silhouette-hugging layers, and experimental draping and multi-colored linens.

From the cutting edge halls of the Art Institute of New York City, this year’s runway showcased fashion lines from current students and recent graduates, including Isaiah Isaac, Luz Ortiz, Haley Hysong, Qutashia Lee, Darhel Anthony, Diana Sanchez, IJ Park, Joshimar Torres, Daniel Jennings, and Michael Doyle.

Each designer bearing a spectacular story of making it to Mercedes Benz New York Fashion Week, they perpetuate a line stemming from their stories, their experiences, their opinions and mindsets.

With freeness and individuality sometimes lost in the industry, the students and recent graduates experimented in their own skins. They tried on and borrowed themes of grandiose, all while simultaneously flying off in separate directions, each taking their turn in the spotlight to showcase what they had hard-earned and won.
