Naeem Khan is a designer of red carpet moments. For this Fall 2014, Khan was inspired by “Cabaret” and boudoir. He said, “It’s very boudoir chic. It’s luxury. It’s rich.” To enhance the feeling of the inside of a woman’s dressing room, there was bedroom-style lighting installation at the top of the runway.
A “Cabaret,” boudoir inspired collection, Khan had great use of satin, velvet materials, and sheer pieces with intricate beadings. Gold piping was a common detail throughout the collection. Khan’s beading skill has always been well known. The beadings were detailed, intricate, yet they were strong and luxurious. Working toward more modern looks, Khan played with angles of geometry.
Khan’s play of textures and layers caught the audience’s eye. It was almost like a trick to the eyes. Khan’s leopard-print overlay was not made of leopard-print fabric; instead it was made of stacks of sequins to construct the spots to have the animal print look. The beaded fringes on the dresses were not simply just fringe of beads. They were fringes of crystals. Even under the fringes there was a layer of sequins.
Khan had fun with these luxurious layers, and they brought out interesting textures. Khan didn’t miss any chance to texturize his garments. Even in animal feather, he dyed the feather in the color of the animal print, which added volume, and texture to the original feathers.
The overall silhouette of Khan’s collection was a bit loose and relaxed. There were many floor length pieces. There were also luxurious pieces yet they had an unintentional feel to them.
Khan’s play of textures and layers were outstanding. With his skills and techniques, Khan presented some eye-catching looks and also long-lasting classic pieces.
