Maria Francesca Pepe SS13 Collections

By Jessie Peng

Born in Foggia, south of Italy, moved to Milan at 18 for University, Maria Francesca Pepe received her MA from Central St Martins and after working for a few designer clothing brands she staged her own jewellery label in London. Maria Francesca Pepe never plays by the rules nor does she define herself into a sort. She only has one thing she insists on – that all the pieces should be sourced and made in Italy because she believes that they have the best crafting skills in the world.

She reshapes her life elements into her contemporary avant-garde style with an edgy balance between kitsch and delicacy. Her work was subsequently endorsed by the world magazine editorials but also well embraced by starring celebrities such as Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Cheryl Cole and Jennifer Lopez.

Building on her prior success for the signature piece MFP Tubular, the metallic bold, chunky and polished necklace, she has reinterpreted the number into a silver version with scrubbing details for the upcoming new season. Other than the variation from Tubular some other popular designs such as the double plated two finger ring and cross pendant ade ring from the HEARTBEAT collection have also been brought forward to MFP 2013 S/S with divergent materials encased.

Additionally, having been inspired by seventies ethnic jewellery, Man Ray’s still life images and Bauhaus graphic like this geometric crossed stars arm cuff, Maria’s motive is to assert her minimalism concept in the MFP 2013 S/S collection.

Another eye-catching piece from the ELEMENT collection is this long pendant necklace for which I already have in mind how to style it with different outfits. I would wear it alone with a plain one- piece dress for a night out and I would pair it with a tank tee and leather leggings for a casual drink on the weekend or if I am in an exotic atmosphere, I might also sport it with a printed tribal sweater and a pair of boyfriend denim jeans. Without any rehearsals, I am utterly surprised by the functionalities and versatilities of this unique piece.

Maria has also anticipated potential in the Men’s accessory market where she is launching her men’s collection for Spring Summer 2013. In order to show a strong and stern concept in a masculine way, Maria adopted low key palette materials such as silver and ruthenium to define the concrete core.
