To earn a spot in the Style Fashion Week calendar is no doubt an accomplishment, but what matters even more is how a designer utilizes that privilege.

Taiwanese designer and former Project Runway participant, Malan Breton, ran with this opportunity. Presenting his Fall Winter 2017 collection at the Madison Square Garden Theater, Breton orchestrated an exhibition of talent and beauty, opening his show by seducing the crowd with a choreographed ballroom dance. The heavy, grey concrete backdrop transported viewers to what looked like a public library or an old bank with large pillars soaring through the supposedly mile-high ceilings.

The show filled the theater with grace. As the dancing couples glided off stage, a full-length gown, reminiscent of liquid chrome, trickled onto the stage. Trends to embrace for the 2017 Fall Winter season, according to Malan Breton, are metallic, plaids, and velvets. His collection of gowns, pantsuits, and outerwear, for both men and women, are laden with gold and silver metallic details, fur accents, hints of winter florals, and menswear styles for women. It was a showcase of progressive 1920’s decadence and glamour, with the male and female models equally sporting top hats and neckties.

When the show came to an end, I begrudgingly exited the theater for the snowy wetlands outside filled with a feeling of refreshment and romance.
