Well-known as the Asian McQueen, Lie Sang Bong often puts drama in his collections, but at the same time keeps the sophistication. For F/W ‘14, Lie Sang Bong was inspired by photographs of volcanic eruptions, lava surging into the sea, and Yellowstone National Park’s majestic Grand Prismatic Spring.
Bong’s words to his debut in New York Fashion Week:
“My goal is always to design in a way that pays respect to tradition while providing something that is relevant for the present, marrying art and commerce, craftsmanship and innovation. The confident, intelligent women of New York have an innate understanding and appreciation for this balance.”
In his F/W ‘14 collection, to feature molten rock beds and surging lava, Bong played with tech fabrics and natural fabrics to create unique and desirable textures. Other materials, included fur, silk, lace, cashmere, and wool.
Bong’s fabrications and textiles speak for themselves. The lava print, and modified houndstooth print, created depth and dimension for the collection. Each garment looks very rich, and has 3-dimensional texture. As of silhouettes, Bong built them out from Bauhaus-influenced geometrical shapes.
The predominant colors are lava red, royal blue, sand and neutrals. Bong had no fear of putting colors together. In one of his coats, he had stripes of red against sand, and then blue.
Bong’s collection definitely contained drama, and at same time featured exquisite skilled tailoring. Bong’s design philosophy had successfully translated into the collection with a bold visual personality.
