Karolyn Pho was a fresh face to the Mercedes Benz Fashion Week this year. She presented her fifth collection and second runway show at Pier 59 Studios on Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2014. Once again, Pho did not disappoint as her collection told the story behind a vagabond. “She meanders through castles in the air traipsing between realities and crossing borders unknown. She is a traveler, a nomad, lost within her self-perception.”
The first section of the collection incorporated day dresses and racer back dresses. Those pieces were constructed in minimal sky blue and crisp white fabrics and a few with pretty chiffon over tiny leopard print dress slips.
We started to see color during the second section: beige, caramel brown, orange, teal and green. She added layers with the cool bomber jacket, a draped trench coat, and a three button long coat. Pho also introduced retro sunglasses and giant printed clutches as accessories.
The two showstopper looks were the beautiful sequin cut-out maxi dress and sequin patched evening dress. These two numbers showed Pho’s versatility as a designer to play with feminine sequins against the first section and the finale of her collection, which went back to sky blue and white palettes in jumpsuits, tuxedo gowns, and boyfriend trousers.
Not only did Pho show diversity in her S/S 15 line, but she also amazed the audience with white nursing shoes as the shoes for all models. They were an unexpected choice, however well complemented the looks.
