I recently attended a China Institute‘s Spring Benefit Luncheon celebrating design at Tribeca Rooftop. At 90 years old, China Institute is the oldest bicultural organization in America devoted exclusively to China offers a range of public programs spanning film, author talks, lectures and short-courses, family programs, culinary programs.
The event celebrated the inspiring continuum of Chinese fashion design, from East-meets-West aesthetics to the exciting dynamic between tradition and innovation. On display was a design showcase, featuring the designs of Yeohlee Teng, Vivienne Tam, Lancy Shi, and designers Merry Wu, and Ji Yeon Lee. Opening remarks were made by WWD Editor James Fallon.
It was truly a treat to hear established designer Yeolee Teng and haute couture designer Guo Pei speak at the event. It’s also wonderful that China Institute is supporting young designers like Merry Wu and Ji Yeon Lee who are graduating seniors from F.I.T.
I was especially proud to see Merry, who I’ve known for several years volunteering for AsianinNY.com. She’s blossomed into a talented bridal wear designer and I can’t wait to see what’s in the future for her!
