W.B. Yeats and Maud Gonne: The Fall 2015 Collection is heartened by the unrequited love between the worldly poet and his other-worldly muse.
Bibhu Mohapatra’s collection for Fall/Winter 2015 featured 41 looks using luxurious fabrics and materials such as ostrich feather, mink, hand woven leather, silk, satin, cashmere, chinchilla and alligator skin.
We had the honor to interview the Indian-American fashion designer backstage before his show for New York Fashion Week at Lincoln Center.
What is your inspiration for this collection?
Bibhu Mohapatra: “My muse is Maud Gonne and she was W.B. Yeats’ muse. She was an actress, political activist, writer, a tough girl and she was beautiful. She was a spiritualist and believed in travelling the world. Her life and that of W.B. Yeats paralleled. He was in love with her but she didn’t reciprocate. It became an inspiring, powerful, dark romance and that’s what the collection is all about.”
Who are you collaborating with this season?
Bibhu Mohapatra: “Yes, Max Martin (an American shoe brand), L’oreal (for hair), Kiss (Nails) and Jay Manuel (Makeup).
Is there anyone that you haven’t collaborated with but would like to in the future?
Bibhu Mohapatra: “There are many artists that I would love to.”
Thank you so much to Bibhu Mohapatra and his team for this interview.
