The 35th Annual Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Press Conference was held on Thursday, June 5th sponsored by AsianInNY.com, Bruce Cost Ginger Ale, ByeJoe, and Fushimi. Executive director of CAPA Stephen Chen, Gen Artistic Director Wan Zhao and renowned Asian American photographer Corky Lee discussed about the history, the background, the Gen project, show details, with brief performances by the dancers.
During Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month, Corky Lee and the Utah Chapter of Organization of Chinese Americans helped organize a group of Asian Americans to recreate the historic photograph celebrating the completion of the Transcontinental Railway.
The original image, while widely distributed, was inaccurate in that not a single Asian/Asian American was present despite the 12,000 Asian/Asian American workers who represented the overwhelming majority of the workforce that built the railroad.
“Where are your roots? Here are ours.” Inspired by Stories of Asian Americans, we invite you to come see CAPA’s project “Gen”, a contemporary theater dance piece. The show will be a journey through history of Asian ancestors starting from the 1840s to today. Gen will take place June 12 – June 15th at 440 STUDIOS: 440 Lafayette Street, New York, NY. Purchase tickets at: www.capaonline.org for $15 only.
