The Taiwanese American Arts Council held its opening gala at the Queens Museum on July 19th. The council was established in 2014 and has helped fund Taiwanese art throughout the country. It helped form the Taiwanese Art Endowment Fund, which spurred the creation of a Taiwan Gallery in the Queens Museum of Art. Taiwanese community leaders Dr. Lung Fong Chen, Thomas Chen, and Patrick Huang helped realize the council’s vision alongside professional curator Luchia Meihua Lee and pioneering Taiwanese modern printmaking artist, Prof. Liao Shiou Ping.
Present at the gala was the Master of Ceremony, Bob Nyman, NYC Dept. of Cultural Affairs Commissioner Tom Finkelpearl and Ambassador of Taipei Economic and Cultural Office, Paul Wen-Liang Chang. The welcoming speech was presented by Dr. Chen Lung Fong. Senator Tony Avella and Executive Director of the New York Foundation for the Arts, Michael L. Royce also attended the gala and welcomed all of the participating artists.
Then event started with an Art Work Appreciation Cocktail Hour, where attendees enjoyed displays of great artwork made by Taiwanese artist. Some of the featured artists included Liao Shiou Ping, T.F. Chen, Long Bin Chen, Lin Shih Pao, Marlene Tsend Yu, Shyu Ruey Shiann, Hsu Tang Wei, Eric C. Jiang, Yang Chin Chih and Jeff Jian Hsin Liao.
During the opening gala, the New Asia Chamber Music Society treated guests to wonderful music performance. Following that event was a mixed dance and music performance by Yung Li Dance and vibraphonist Yuhan Su.
According to Luchia Meihua Lee, Executive Director of Taiwanese American Arts Council, “The TAAC aims to provide assistance to Taiwanese artists, scholars, and specialists in the arts. The TAAC will foster awareness of Taiwanese American art and encourage dialogue on artistic issues within the broader community in the United States and to support the Taiwanese endowment fund at the Queens Museum, and future collaboration projects and to build alliances with other organizations.”
