Celebrating the National Day of the Republic of China

More than 1 thousand guests were invited by Paul Chang, Ambassador and Director General of TECO in New York, to attend a special cocktail reception on Oct 7th at New York Marriott Marquis to celebrate Republic of China’s 103 National Day. AsianInNY was honored to be invited!

Many special guests all attended the celebration gala including Ambassador Colin Beck, Permanent Representative of Solomon Islands to the United Nations, Honorable Melissa Mark-Viverito, Speaker of the New York City Council, Councilman Peter Koo, Assemblyman Ron Kim, and Mr. Eric Ng, President of the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association.

Ambassador Paul Chang gave a welcome speech: “It is a great honor for me to welcome you all to this reception celebrating the National Day of the Republic of China. One hundred and three years ago, the ROC was founded in mainland China. And today, it continues to thrive in Taiwan and has been widely recognized as a success story in the Asia-Pacific region. As the Republic of China uprightly positions itself in a globalized world, I want to share with you some updates regarding Taiwan’s economic performance and international relations. The outlook for Taiwan’s economy remains positive. In 2013, Taiwan was the 27th largest world economy and bilateral trade between the U.S. and Taiwan reached US$63 billion, making Taiwan the United States’ 11th largest trading partner. This year, the economic growth of Taiwan is expected to reach 3.4%, up from 1.3% last year. As for the future, Taiwan aims to sign more economic cooperation agreements with its trading partners and join the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) and the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP). The ultimate goal is to play a meaningful role in regional economic integration, so as to boost Taiwan’s economic and trade development, strengthen its industries, and enhance the people’s welfare. I would like to express our gratitude to the Heads of State or representatives from our 16 diplomatic allies for speaking out for us in the General debate of the U.N. 69th session. We firmly believe that through our relentless efforts, our goal to join more UN-affiliated agencies can be realized.”

We truly enjoy tonight’s cocktail reception and it’s great to see so many friends attending the wonderful evening in celebration of the Republic of China’s National Day!
