On May 15 in the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office, Acuns-Tecony Seminar Series in New York hosted the talk “Building The Future We Want: Post-2015 Development Agenda & Indigenous Participation.” Ambassador Paul Wen-Liang Chang opened the seminar and introduced Dr. Alistair Edgar, Executive Director, Academic Council on the UN System.
This seminar was co-hosted by TAIPEI ECONOMIC AND CULTURAL OFFICE IN NEW YORK, ACADEMIC COUNCIL ON THE UNITED NATIONS SYSTEM, CENTER FOR INTERNATIONAL HUMAN RIGHTS, JOHN JAY COLLEGE OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE, PERMANENT MISSION OF SOLOMON ISLANDS TO THE UNITED NATIONS, and PERMANENT MISSION OF KIRIBATI TO THE UNITED NATIONS.
There were two parts of the speech: Indigenous People as Fundamental Players in the “World We Want,” and Taiwanese Indigenous Peoples’ Educations Recent trends in the fluctuation of student and teacher numbers. Dr. Elsa Stamatopoulou, who is a director of the Indigenous People’s Rights Program and Institute for the Study of Human Rights, was the speaker of part one. Dr. Tunkan Tansikian, who is an Associate Professor of Indigenous Studies and graduated from National Dong Hwa University in Taiwan, was the speaker of part two.
The event was informative and knowledgeable in raising awareness of the indigenous participation.
